If you’ve seen Sin City or 300 than you know Frank Miller is responsible for quite a bit of violence in comic books (and comic book movie adaptations). It shouldn’t surprise you to hear that one of Miller’s comics is considered to be the most violent of comic book titles, Hard Boiled, which tells the story of an insurance salesman who realizes he is actually a cyborg assassin, as well as the possible savior of the robot race.
The comic, which was made up of a three-issue miniseries, was once slated to have a movie version made, directed by David Fincher and starring Nicolas Cage. That fell through and the project has just been kind of floating out there ever since. Now Miller says he’s been talking with his Spirit producer Deborah Del Prente about it becoming a movie again, with an interesting choice to lead the project: Miller himself.
MTV Movie Blog reports that Miller has decided, following his Sin City and Spirit directing experiences, that he really is the only person suitable to bring Hard Boiled to the big screen. “I’ve got a really unusual way I want to do it.” Miller announced at this past weekend’s New York Comic-Con.
I would be surprised if Miller got another project green-lit before The Spirit is released to the public. Even though he was a part of Sin City, I would think studios would want him to prove himself a bit as a director on his own before they continue handing him money and projects. Still, who better to envision Hard Boiled on film than the man who created it?
