Will Ant-Man Have A Surprise Villain?
Marvel taught us to expect the unexpected. The superhero movie giant likes to throw us curveballs, whether they're in the form of Thanos' beautiful smirking face, the true intentions of The Mandarin, or the death of you know in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The one for Ant-Man, however, could possibly be the inclusion of a surprise villain to battle both the size-shrinking Scott Lang and the rampaging Yellowjacket.
[We will be discussing potential SPOILERS regarding the ending of Ant-Man. For those looking to go in with fresh eyes, turn back now.]
You all know how toy sets can sometimes let major plot points from a film drop, right? LEGO sets have previously let slip the twist in Iron Man 3 with Aldrich Killian and gave us a look at Vision before his poster was revealed. It seems as though the brand has done it again with Ant-Man.
Product images of an Ant-Man set, called "Final Battle," presumably pertains to, well, the final battle between Scott Lang and Yellowjacket. It's important to refer to Ant-Man as Lang in this case because -- and here's the big spoiler -- Hank Pym is also featured as a figure in this set. Not only that, but he appears to be wearing a darker, more menacing Ant-Man suit than Scott Lang. Why is this important? Comic Book Movie speculates that this adds more fuel to the fire of rumors, rumor being the key word, that suggest Pym is the real villain of the film.
Questions of Pym's true loyalities circulated last year when Michael Douglas was announced in the role. Variety initially reported that Pym was the villain, but edited that when Marvel issued an official press release on the casting. Since then, this same LEGO toy set of the final battle was previewed at a toy fair in Nuremberg, thouhg at the time it didn't feature Yellowjacket and just included figures of Lang and Pym battling each other. LEGO doesn't always show us the entire picture, and it's still likely that we are all reading too much into this. But knowing Marvel, we wouldn't be surprised if Lang's mentor/recruiter turned out to have ambitions of his own. Even if it is false, what is Pym doing in this scene anyway?
Ant-Man features Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, a reformed master thief enlisted by Hank Pym (Douglas) to steal back his Ant-Man technology. His former business partner, Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), grew jealous of his invention and stole it for himself with the intention of selling it to the highest bidder. Evangeline Lilly also stars as Hope van Dyne, Pym's daughter, whose comic book counterpart is the superhero Wasp. The film opens in theaters on July 17, at which point we'll officially be able to settle the truth behind this massive rumor.
