Well here’s a psychosexual development. Deadline says Viggo Mortensen will replace Christopher Waltz as Sigmund Freud in the upcoming movie The Talking Cure. Waltz left after taking a role in Water for Elephants or as I call it: The Most Overrated Book of the Decade. Mortensen will step in as the backup plan and star as the Austrian psychoanalyst.

I can’t help but think Waltz would have been perfect in this role as a dude who did cocaine while basically mapping out the subconscious. It would have offered the complete antithesis of his Oscar-winning role as “The Jew Hunter,” in Inglourious Basterds. He would have played a Jewish-Austrian who narrowly escaped the Nazi’s wrath. But alas, Waltz has moved on, leaving Mortensen to take the reins as a Freud. Mortensen is, most assuredly, an adequate replacement in the story of Freud’s relationship with his pupil Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender).

The Talking Cure, and here I totally agree with Tim Adler, is an absolutely terrible name for a movie that could explore and uncover one of the most interesting men of the 20th Century. With any luck, Viggo can bring some of his intrigue and a little je ne sais quoi to a role full of sex, drugs, and super-ego.
