About two weeks ago, we told you that Harrison Ford was going to appear in Wayne Kramer’s illegal alien movie, Crossing Over. Now, Variety says that Ashley Judd has also joined the growing cast that, in addition to Ford, includes Ray Liotta, Cliff Curtis, and Sean Penn. It is expected that more names will be joining the ensemble prior to filming, which begins next month in Los Angeles.
The story will focus on people from various countries who are trying to become legal residents in Los Angeles. The format has been compared to Traffic and its multiple, intersecting storylines. Judd’s character is trying to adopt a Nigerian girl while also working as an immigration defense attorney.
Variety says that Judd “has been focusing her attention on indie pics”, which makes perfect sense. Her recent non-indie pics, be they thrillers (High Crimes, Twisted) or romantic-comedies ( Someone Like You) have been less than blockbusters. I think she’s a very good actress who makes some very bad casting choices. All those seemingly interchangeable thrillers in the late 1990s didn’t seem to be a good fit for her. She’s in danger of becoming another Sandra Bullock. Hopefully this group piece will help her in rebuilding her rep.
