The BFG premiered at Cannes Film Festival this week, and now Disney has released a new trailer for its big team up with Steven Spielberg. The reviews for the film are also starting to come in and, while results are mixed, it’s hard not to argue that the trailer is at least touching on an emotional level.
This trailer is really playing up the feels between BFG and the little girl, Sophie, and there’s plenty of inspirational dialogue and speeches from the giant to pluck your heartstrings. The world of the giants looks very cool and magical, but I don’t think I could tell you what the film is about. It looks like the BFG has a bully problem, but how that factors into the grand scheme of things is unclear. I’ve never read the book the movie is based on, but the trailer should presumably make it clear what to expect from the movie. Then again, the trailer does have a lot of fantastical imagery and stunts (I’m partial to the big dream tree) and seems to be largely aimed at children.
The reviews for the film have so far been mixed, but the consensus seems to be that, while The BFG has no shortage of charm, it drags its feet through certain parts. Many critics have reported that while young kids will most likely love the movie, their parents may be less than thrilled. I don’t think that’s a huge deal considering that it is a kid’s movie, but seeing as how this comes from Steven Spielberg, people may have been expecting a family film that everyone can relate to like E.T.
The BFG is based on the book of the same name written by Roald Dahl, who also wrote other iconic children’s stories such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and James and the Giant Peach. Steven Spielberg directs the film with a script penned by Melissa Mathison. The BFG stars frequent Spielberg collaborator Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, Penelope Wilton, and Rebecca Hall. The BFG will play at the Sydney Film Festival this June before coming to the U.S. this summer on July 1.
