Is Beetlejuice 2 Really Happening? Here's What Tim Burton Says
Update: Shortly after this story broke, the UK Independent ran an update with a quote from Tim Burton's reps denying the story from ShowbizSpy. The reps tell the Independent: "I rep Tim Burton and wanted to let you know that Tim did not provide a statement to confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development. Tim’s focus is entirely on Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children and developing Dumbo."
FROM EARLIER: In the more than 30 years since the original Beetlejuice, there have been repeated talks about the possibility of making a sequel. It has always seemed like the key players were all interested but nothing has ever come of it. Saying the character’s name three times was not enough to make a sequel happen, I tried. Now, Tim Burton has clarified the situation. Will there be a Beetlejuice 2? Yes, there will be. And probably sooner than you thought.
There are so many moving parts to making a movie happen that often, even when everybody wants to make the film, there’s one issue or another standing in the way. It truly looks like all those impediments are now gone. Tim Burton spoke to Showbiz Spy about Beetlejuice 2 and according to him the only reason the sequel isn’t in pre-production yet is, well, there isn’t a reason. It sounds like it will be very soon.
Director? Check. Lead actors? Check and check. Screenplay? Check. Green light from studio? Check. Holy shit, guys...
After all the talk and the back and forth there really doesn’t appear to be anything standing in the way. The only thing that Tim Burton doesn’t say is that filming is scheduled, so it’s possible production could be delayed if everybody involved won’t all be available at the same time in the short term, but even if that puts filming off, it doesn’t appear to be a reason that would prevent the movie from happening. Get ready for the return of the ghost with the most.
The possibility of Beetlejuice 2 seemed to become serious in 2013 when Tim Burton was first in talks to direct it. At the same time both Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton had said they would be interested in returning. Then, about a year ago, when Birdman helped remind people that Michael Keaton was still around, Tim Burton said that a script for a new Beetlejuice was being written. This was then shortly followed by an interview with Ryder, who admitted to being on board the new project. Now, it appears that script is done and everybody is pretty close to being ready to get back to work.
No details have been given about what the new script entails, or what may be in store for Beetlejuice or Lydia Deetz. With the movie safely in Tim Burton’s hands, we’re confident that Beetlejuice 2 can be a solid return for an iconic character. Are you excited to see Beetlejuice again?
