Love him or hate him, there is no denying that director Bernardo Bertolucci has a unique vision. Often in the past, that vision has involved excessive nudity (Brando in Last Tango In Paris; the entire cast in The Dreamers).
He is ready to temporarily put the clothes back on and tackle a different kind of controversy. According to Variety, he is returning to the director’s chair to direct Bel Canto, based on a novel by Ann Patchett. He will also adapt the screenplay.
The terrorism-themed story takes place in an imaginary country in South America. Panic hits when a guerilla group enters the head politician’s villa through the airducts during a party, and takes everyone hostage. That is not quite the jolly old time they were expecting when they RSVP’d.
Bel Canto has not been offered to distributors yet, and casting is still up in the air.
