Besson Back In The Game

What is it lately with directors threatening retirement? They’re like athletes who just can’t stay out of the game. First Scorsese claimed he was done making movies, only to turn around and sign a massive, multi-movie deal with Paramount. Now Luc Besson is going back on his retirement promises.

Production Weekly says Besson is contemplating work on a sequel to his upcoming fantasy movie Arthur and the Minimoys (Arthur and the Invisibles in America). If Minimoys does well, he wants to start shooting the followup, Arthur and the Forbidden City as early as June. Both films are based on childrens’ books written by Besson.

I don’t know how Arthur and the Minimoys will be received internationally, but I can assure him that the movie’s going to tank big time here in the United States. It opens in limited release in just two weeks, and the only advertising we’ve seen is in the form of a few really lame looking Arthur and the Invisibles posters which make it look like a film based on those crappy troll doll toys which stopped being popular here about a decade ago. Unless they’re planning some sort of better, last-minute American marketing blitz the movie’s doomed in the US. Go ahead and book your retirement plans Besson.
