Billy Joel has been putting off doing a concert documentary for quite a while now, but the musician is finally giving in and putting on a hell of a show for a documentary that will not only focus on the musician, but also the locale of the concert. Last Play at Shea will depict Joel’s concerts at Shea Stadium this week, the last concert to be performed before the stadium is torn down.

Variety reports that Joel has entered into a deal with Spitfire Pictures to produce the documentary, which will use concert footage along with documentary style interviews. The hope is to create something styled like a Ken Burns documentary that looks at Shea, which started hosting concerts with The Beatles in 1965, and the evolution of Joel, from his blue-collar roots to today.

Expect to see more than just Joel in the concert part of the documentary. The musician has around a dozen guest stars planned to join him during his two night Shea Stadium concert, although nobody has disclosed any names. With a documentary planned, expect a soundtrack made up from the concerts as well - good news for those of us who can’t see the Piano Man perform live.
