Broken Lizard Competes For Beer
Making money with Dukes of Hazzard has given comedy troupe Broken Lizard some credibility. Ok, technically Dukes wasn’t a Broken Lizard movie in name, but come on, face it… it was.
A few weeks ago Broken Lizard signed a three-year first look deal with Warner Bros. They immediately put it to use selling them the NFL themed comedy Nutcracker. Presumably it takes place in an alternate universe where no one ever invented the jockstrap. Now they’ve sold another pitch to the WB, this time it’s all about Beer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next potentially horrible, unfunny BL movie will be Beerfest (not to be confused with another upcoming unfunny comedy by Dirty Work’s Artie Lange called Beer League). Think Fight Club, but even less funny and with booze instead of fists. Two brothers visiting Oktoberfest in German stumble on onto a beer version of ‘Fight Club’. It’s a super-secret, centuries old tradition in which participants compete in beer games. The brothers enter, lose, and then return to the United States to assemble their own team of all-star drinkers in order to try again.
In the two comedies they’ve officially done so far (Super Troopers and Club Dread, the guys at Broken Lizard have achieved a sum total of five funny minutes. That puts them head and shoulders above Tom Green, but I’m not sure it justifies the continued funding of their movies, especially when the last one, Club Dread, didn’t make any money.
Broken Lizard is Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.
