OK, in the last few months I've written about so many upcoming movie projects that remind of The Fantasticks that I'm going to have to stop mentioning the connection at all. For one, it's apparently very popular to make movies about parents watching their children fall in love, or about neighbors falling in love, or about a boy and a girl who pretend to hate each other and then fall in love. And second, it's making me look like way too much of a theater geek to reference The Fantasticks, and until Glee becomes a hit, that doesn't make me very cool.
Anyway. There's this project Flipped, which may or may not resemble a long-running Off-Broadway musical, about a boy and a girl who live next door to each other and start off hating each other but share a kiss once they hit their teens. Rob Reiner is directing the film, which is an adaptation of Wendelin Van Draanen's young-adult novel set in the late 50s. And now the movie has a cast! The main kids haven't popped up yet-- maybe Dakota Fanning is too busy?-- but all the grown-ups are in place.
According to THR, Aidan Quinn and Penelope Ann Miller will play the girl's parents, while Anthony Edwards and Rebecca De Mornay will be the boy's parents on the other side of the fence. Kevin Weisman pops up as the girl's mentally challenged uncle, and John Mahoney rounds things out as the boy's grandfather.
