Captain America: Civil War May Have Room For One More Surprise Character

Captain America: Civil War has a huge cast. It’d probably be easier to just name the people who aren’t in the movie, but let’s recap which heroes are appearing just to be clear. Over on Iron Man’s team, we have War Machine, Black Widow, Vision, and Black Panther. Accompanying Captain America are Winter Soldier, Falcon, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Ant-Man. Somewhere in the mix is Spider-Man, but his allegiance has yet to be revealed. Regardless, these are some intense battle lines being drawn, and at first glance, it might seem like Iron Man’s team has more firepower. However, it’s now being strongly alluded to that Captain America has a big ace up his sleeve, and we mean that literally.

Just like in his cinematic debut last year, it was clear that Scott Lang would continue shrinking as Ant-Man in Captain America: Civil War, but then it was rumored that he would also turn into Giant-Man, one of the alter-egos of his predecessor Hank Pym in the comics. Talk of seeing Giant-Man resumed again when an image of a Funko Pop! Vinyl figure version of him from the Captain America: Civil War line leaked out. Then, this past week at the Toy Fair in New York, Yahoo! noticed even more types of Giant-Mans on display, including a Giant-Man LEGO figure who towers over the rest of the crew in his set. This seems to confirm that at some point during Captain America: Civil War, Scott will reach new heights (had to do it) to take on his superhero adversaries.

As we’ve seen in the past, just because a toy version of a character is released to tie into an upcoming movie doesn’t mean that they’ll necessarily appear in said movie. Remember, Funko came out with a Grey Hulk Pop! Vinyl figure for Avengers: Age of Ultron, but he never turned his original color in the movie. There was also a LEGO set featuring Hank Pym as a dark-suited Ant-Man, leading some to believe he might be a surprise villain, but the only time we ever saw him as Ant-Man was in a flashback. However, with all the different toy lines featuring Giant-Man, it looks more and more likely that Scott’s in store for a massive growth spurt, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

It would also be a huge (sorry, I can’t help myself) surprise for moviegoers who aren’t familiar with the comics. They got used to seeing Scott shrink in Ant-Man last year, so to see him suddenly grow several stories would be shocking. To comic book fans, on the other hand, it would just be awesome to see yet another part of the Ant-Man universe come to life. Assuming the technology to grow isn’t temporary, that could mean we’ll get to see Giant-Man again in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Captain America: Civil War charges into theaters on May 5.
