The sequence showcases that Cap already has already started getting used to modern day technology, which means that while Cap is going to be a man out of time, he’s not necessarily going to be befuddled, as evidenced by the ease in which he applies a fancy combat earpiece. There’s also Black Widow trying to set him up on a date, a bit of small-talk that sidesteps the obvious moviegoer interest in seeing the absolutely gorgeous Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson lock lips. We don’t get to see Batroc in action, but we do see Cap, the Widow and Frank Grillo’s Brock Rumlow (keep an eye on him, Cap!).
We also get to see Cap plunge into the water from an airplane, which is… pushing it? Cap’s Super Soldier Serum gives him peak human performance in regards to strength and athleticism, but surely a fall into the ocean at that elevation would crush every bone in his body, superhuman or no. Even if his skin were reasonably, superhumanly tougher, and that costume protected him from additional impact, he should still at least be sore. Why can’t he just take a parachute like the rest of the agents and fly down close enough so that a drop in the water isn’t so drastic and potentially painful? Cap, why can’t you just take more safety precautions and mind your health a bit more? We worry about you, dude.
The clip ultimately runs a bit over 2:30, allowing for another trailer of the film to run, showcasing even more action and suspense while acknowledging that S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to be compromised in some way and that someone will die. Nick Fury, are you not long for this world? Can you say "Life Model Decoy"? It also features a voiceover by a British woman, which could very well be Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, possibly having lived to an elderly age, even if she’s need to be over 100 for that to make any real sense. Still, hey… "Life Model Decoys!" Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters April 4th, but you can click here to find out how to see it early.
