Castin Effect
Made for only thirteen million dollars but grossing almost $58 million, there was no surprise when it was announced that a sequel would be made to Butterfly Effect, The 2004 movie was met with mixed reactions when first announced, but actually received a pretty good response, and thus far is the only movie out there that can prove Ashton Kutcher actually has some acting chops.
Although no characters, writers, or anyone involved with the first movie will be returning, the sequel is underway with casting news finally arriving and it appears the studio is keeping costs down by using the same technique from the first film – utilizing television actors.
Erica Durance (“Smallville”) and Eric Lively (“The L Word”) have been announced as the cast for the follow up film, which will use the same concept of time travel and cause-and-effect for the film’s plot but in all other ways will be independent from the first film. You know, because so many people out there can do that sort of thing that the first movie specifically went out of its way to explain Kutcher’s character inherited the ability from his wacked-out dad. At the very least the sequel should try to fit in Ethan Suplee who appeared in the first film before his new found success with “My Name is Earl”.
I’m sure Durance and Lively will absolutely shine in the follow up which is being worked on by some experts in the sequel field. The film is penned by Michael D. Weiss (Death Train, Octopus 2: River of Fear) and directed by John R. Leonetti (Mortal Kombat 2: Annihilation). And if the sequel isn’t that great, everyone involved can just go back in time and pretend it never happened. I mean, how else would the director of the Mortal Kombat sequel get another job if he didn't have that ability?
