Casting News For Thor
Marvel’s movie empire is moving forward, with the arrival of some casting news regarding the studio’s God of Thunder, Thor. Unfortunately it isn’t the kind of news we expected; no big celebrity name being attached. In fact, it’s kind of the opposite, with a description of the type of person casting directors are looking for, which could indicate they are moving away from searching for major star power and looking for a less known person.
The news comes online courtesy of Coming Attractions, who has their hands on the casting description for Thor:
Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20'S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD.
Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant, and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and severely humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature hero of our film.
I find the casting news a little surprising, since we had gotten word previously that the movie would include Donald Blake, who was a kind of alter ego for Thor - a human prison due to his wreckless behavior. It sounds like we might see Thor before that transformation in the movie, instead of starting the way the original comic did, with Blake discovering the power to transform into the Thunder God.
I can’t say I’m shocked at getting a description as opposed to a bigger name attaching themselves to the movie. We already know Marvel’s intention is to build all of these movies into an Avengers flick, which would require the cooperation of the main cast members of each of the respective movies. Robert Downey Jr. is already a big name to ask to share the screen with an ensemble cast, so expect a lot of the other Avengers characters to work as vehicles that build stars instead of featuring existing ones.
The casting announcement lists the movie as beginning production in July, so expect to hear more news as this project develops soon.
