Chappelle's Movie
Every week I wonder when flash-in-the-pan superstar Dave Chapelle will wear out his welcome. Last weekend I watched his latest HBO special and for a few minutes zoned out and thought I was watching Martin Lawrence. Even Chapelle is sick of “Rick James Bitch!” when are we finally going to get sick of the media barrage that is him these days? I for one am beaten down from seeing his name so much. He’s funny, but not $50 million dollars funny.
Well evidently director Michael Gondry of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind isn’t sick of him, since Variety is reporting that Chapelle and Gondry are teaming up on some sort of a musical feature film. The project’s details are still under wraps, but word has it that Chapelle won’t be required to do any actual acting (which is a good thing since he’s only slightly worse than Chris Rock) but will instead will play emcee, do standup and scripted comedy. Maybe it’s a movie version of “The Chapelle Show”? Or perhaps he’s reprising his character from The Nutty Professor. They’ve got a $5 million dollar budget to play with, so don’t expect anything too fancy when they start shooting in Brooklyn later this month.
