Charles Manson: The Musical?
The only thing creepier and more deranged than a mug shot of Charles Manson, is the premise for a new movie based on his mass murders. Throw in the band Rancid (remember them? I do, unfortunately), messiahs, and dance numbers, and you have one heck of a wacky assortment.
According to Hollywood Reporter, a stop-motion-animated musical by John Roecker called Live Freaky! Die Freaky has been picked up by Wellspring. The movie is about a young man in the year 3069 who finds a copy of the book “Helter Skelter”, that delves into detail about the Manson family murders in the 1960’s. The man starts using this book as a new-age bible and idolizes Manson as the new-age Jesus. He spreads his word around town, preaching of a better world through “music, murder, and mayhem.”
Sounds very weird, to say the least. And the world can always use an extra helping of weirdness. The voice cast includes Billie Joe Armstrong (lead singer of Greenday) in the lead role, and Tim Armstrong of Rancid. As long as he doesn’t sing, we should be safe. But since it’s a musical, I will get my earplugs handy. Check back for more on this musical-murderfest.
[JOSH NOTES: The film itself was first released in 2003 on DVD, but Wellspring is giving it life in the United States in theatrical release.]
