I’m one of those crazy guys who likes Jimi Hendrix to play Jim Hendrix songs. But some people want those songs to be sung to them by chorus made up of senior citizens. Fortunately for them, one such chorus exists in Massachusetts. Since most of us don’t live in Massachusetts or anywhere nearby, Stephen Walker made a documentary about the chorus of rock tune singing denture wearers called Young @ Heart, which is coincidentally the name of the chorus.
Fox Searchlight has purchased the theatrical rights for the documentary which originally played on television in Britian and at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It won an audience prize because it’s about seniors singing “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and audiences love stuff like that. It makes us feel better about stuffing our grandmother in the old folks home that we’ve only been to twice.
Young @ Heart has their own website and you can look at pictures of them and buy some of their music. It’s also interesting to guess which of the woman had husbands who were killed in World War I. In Spring 2008, you can hear them belt out “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” at a theater near you.
