Common Is Joining Suicide Squad
David Ayer's Suicide Squad will be going into production fairly soon, but while the movie already has an absolutely huge cast, apparently the film still isn't done adding notable names. We know this because new reports have identified Common as the latest actor to join the cast of the 2016 blockbuster.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break this casting news, but what's unfortunate is that the details pretty much stop there. The trade report not only doesn't mention who the rapper-cum-actor will be playing in Suicide Squad, but they don't even vaguely hint at what kind of role he will be playing in the movie (be it a substantial role, merely a cameo, or a supporting part that could potentially become something bigger in the future of the DC Cinematic Universe). All we know at this point is that he's going to be in the film.
Based on the DC Comics of the same name, Suicide Squad will follow a group of convicted supervillains who agree to participate in extremely dangerous and deadly black ops missions in exchange for commuted sentences. Whether or not Common will be playing a good guy or a bad guy within this scenario is currently unknown, but what is very likely is that he will be getting to spend some screen time with some other very talented people. In addition to the Selma actor, the blockbuster will also feature Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Cara Delevigne as Enchantress, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. And while their roles in the movie have not yet been confirmed, we can also expect to see Adawale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Karen Fukuhara, Jay Hernandez, Adam Beach, Jim Parrack, Scott Eastwood and Ike Barinholtz as part of the ensemble.
Common, whose real name is Lonnie Lynn, made his feature acting debut in Joe Carnahan's 2006 action comedy Smokin' Aces, but has since starred in a large variety of projects, including Ridley Scott's American Gangster, McG's Terminator Salvation, George Miller's Happy Feet Two, and most recently Jaume Collet-Serra's Run All Night. He is also currently attached to star in Martin Campbell's submarine thriller Hunter Killer, as well as the new Chicago-set Spike Lee drama Chiraq.
It's worth noting that Common has talked in the past about the idea of possibly playing the John Stewart version of Green Lantern as part of the DC Cinematic Universe, but it could be tricky to get a complex character like that into the middle of the action in Suicide Squad. That being said, who do you think he could wind up playing in the film? Hit the comments below and give us your best guesses for the role!
