Conquistador Sets Sail
"Conquistador" is a much cooler word to say than "conquerer." Although they basically mean the same thing, one sounds sexy and attention-grabbing, while the other barely flows off the tongue. I guess it's true that everything sounds better with an accent.
According to Variety, the life of 16th century Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes, aptly titled Conquistador, is coming to life. Hollywood Gang Productions is making the epic film on a $40 million budget, which makes it the biggest budget Spanish-language film of all time. Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington (House Of Sand and writers Nicholas Kazan (Reversal Of Fortune) and Carlos Bardem are attached to the project.
The film follows Cortes as he sails westward from Cuba in 1519 in his journey to expand the Spanish Empire, which leads to the destruction of the Aztec Empire. "This is the story of landing on the moon and finding out there is a civilization already settled there, when the unknown meets the unknown”, Waddington explains. Expect plenty of bloodbaths to ensue.
Conquistador does not have a cast yet. Principal photography is slated to begin in Brazil and elsewhere in South America in September.
