Cusack Attempts To Save Jan De Bont
Directro Jan de Bont has taken a break from trying to breath life into failed giant shark projects pushed by asshole internet webmasters to make something that maybe won’t suck. If it does suck, at least it has John Cusack.
The Hollywood Reporter says Cusack has joined the cast of Stopping Power, an action thriller where he’ll play a test pilot. To save his kidnapped daughter from an escaped thief, he’ll have to go really fast. It’s a chase movie.
The good thing here is that while Jan de Bont has made some shitty movies, his best ones have been about people going faster than the recommended speed limit. This is his area of expertise. He directed Speed, which people seemed to love; and he also directed Twister, which is a lot more fun than it tends to get credit for. Of course after that he made The Haunting and Tomb Raider, and right now he’s working on the aforementioned shitty giant shark movie, but maybe Cusack could help lead him back to popcorn movie redemption. Jan de Bont deserves to be right up there with Michael Bay, rather than stuck a notch or two below Rob Cohen on the brain dead action director sliding scale.
