David Cronenberg To Direct Adaptation Of Jonathan Lethem's As She Climbed Across the Table
It would seem that David Cronenberg has absolutely no desire to sit on a couch and relax for any extended length of time. While the filmmaker hasn't released a film since 2007, the last year has kept him quite busy. While we're still waiting for the arrival of A Dangerous Method - which, sadly, still doesn't have a release date - the director has been hard at work on Cosmopolis, the Don DeLillo adaptation starring Robert Pattinson. But while that movie is still in post-production, Cronenberg has already chosen his next project.
According to Deadline, Media Rights Capital has acquired the rights to the Jonathan Lethem novel As She Climbed Across the Table and David Cronenberg is currently attached to direct. Bruce Wagner wrote the adaptation of the story, which centers on a love triangle between "an academic, his particle-physicist girlfriend, and the black hole that comes as the result of her lab experiments." When the physicist leaves the main character to focus more on her work, he decides that he needs to do everything he can to get her back, even if it means being sucked into nothingness. The project will be the second time the filmmaker has worked with the writer, as Cronenberg served as producer on Wagner's directorial debut I'm Losing You.
This project sounds thoroughly weird and right up Cronenberg's ally. It's been a while since the director blended a bit of science-fiction into his films, so this could be quite great. After all, this is the guy who brought us Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly. It should be a welcome comeback.
