Demme In Concert
I'm not a big fan of concert movies. Every time I see anything, there's always an ad for some concert that's going to be broadcast live to movie theaters around the country. It just doesn't appeal to me. If I'm going to see a concert, I want to be there seeing it live. What's the point of sitting in a theater? It loses so much of the magic.
But Jonathan Demme has a new project, and it is in essence a concert movie. Demme you may remember from such films as The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, and 2004's remake of The Manchurian Candidate. Now, he's making a Neil Young concert movie. Sounds weird right?
But use this link to check out the trailer for Neil Young: Heart of Gold. I'm not sure I've ever seen a concert filmed quite like this. The entire movie was shot over two nights worth of performances by Neil Young at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. When you watch the trailer, it's more like you're watching a fictional film with a concert in it, than watching the filming of something performed live. It's striking, beautiful, and so is Neil's music. Perhaps this is something kind of special.
We've also got a first look at the movie's poster for you. In case you hadn't noticed, it's posted to your right.
