Derek Luke To Play Gabe Jones In Captain America: The First Avenger
With the film set to arrive in theaters on July 22, you'd think that we'd have the entire cast of Captain America: The First Avenger revealed by now. As it is the list is stacked from top to bottom, including talent like Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Hugo Weaving, Toby Jones, and Neal McDonough. Apparently, however, one name that has managed to escape everyone's attention is Derek Luke, who is apparently in the movie and Black Film has discovered who he will be playing.
The site has learned through a reliable source that Luke, who first made a splash in the Denzel Washington-directed Antwone Fisher, will be playing Gabe Jones, one of the original members of the Hollowing Commando's, Sgt. Nick Fury's unit during World War II. Discounting Fury, who, while played by Samuel L. Jackson in the movies, was white in the original comics, Jones was the first African-American member of the elite fighting group and one of the sergeant's closest confidants. Following the war Jones became a member of the ultra-secret government agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., headed up by Fury.
Introducing a character like Gabe Jones brings about a whole new line of questions, as does pretty much any new addition to the Marvel universe. Will an older version of Jones be appearing in The Avengers? How about the planned solo S.H.I.E.L.D. movie? If he does reappear, will Luke be recast or put in old-man make-up? Oh so many questions, so few actual answers.
