Earlier this year saw the release of Room 237, a documentary that had critics buzzing at last fall's New York Film Festival for its dizzying discussions of the various meanings lying within Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Whether or not you agreed with the unseen interviewee's outrageous theories on the horror staple, the inventive and surprisingly funny doc offered plenty of food for thought. Next, it seems a new doc about the many meanings hidden within another supernatural-themed 1980s classic is on the way.
The trailer above was unearthed by Documentary Channel (via Movies.com). Spook Central asks devoted fans of Ghostbusters to share their theories on what Ivan Reitman's action-comedy is really all about. What is the relevance of the Ghostbuster logo? Is the movie about the taboo habit of smoking? Is it all about sex? Is Slimer suffering from attention deficit disorder? Is Sigourney Weaver's Dana Barrett afraid not of ghosts but of becoming a mother? Or is it all about obesity? Curiously, the truth for several of this movie's theorists lies in the fridge.
But is this a real documentary or just a clever parody trailer? Documentary Channel says Spook Central's producer/director Ivo Shandor says it's real, and will be released this September. This statement is repeated in his Twitter feed, where he also retweeted an AV Club headline that declared it the trailer a fake. What does it all mean? Honestly, we don't know. But personally, I'd be far more interested in seeing a full-fledged doc of this sort than the nonsense Aykroyd keeps threatening for Ghostbusters 3.
