Though The Wackness, coming out next weekend, will technically be the first film in theaters from director Jonathan Levine, it's actually his second movie. The first one, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, has been the subject of much speculation among horror fans since it debuted at the Toronto Film Festival almost two years ago. Even though it was picked up soon after the festival by the Weinstein Company, it's suffered both a change in distributor (it's now with Senator Films) and constant release date changes.
It's gotten so bad, apparently, that even Levine doesn't know what's happening. “You're gonna have to give me an update,” he said when asked for the latest on Mandy Lane's fate. He continued, “To be honest, I've kind of separated myself from it.” He says he's been dragged around just as much as the press has, never knowing when or even if the movie was coming out. “All I want is for them to pick a day, and call me, and I'll do whatever I can to promote it.
The good news is that Levine is confident that the movie will be out by the end of the year, and he's encouraged by a new poster that's been released on the Internet recently (you can see it at Shock Till You Drop). And he's not exactly unemployed-- he said he's working on an adaptation for Sony of the novel Echelon Vendetta, which he describes as ”Kind of like The Bourne Identity on acid.” So even if we won't see Mandy Lane soon, we at least have that to look forward to.
