With Moon, director Duncan Jones set some high expectations for whatever his follow-up would be. When that follow-up came, it was in the form of Source Code, a trippy, time-bending thriller based on a script by writer Ben Ripley. This could have gone either way. Jones proved he had directorial chops with his lunar excursion, but Source Code was Ripley's first shot at the big leagues, with his previous credits limited to a pair of latter-day Species sequels. The final verdict: pretty good, if the flick's 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes is to be believed. (For the record, our own Katey Rich wasn't as impressed, giving Source Code only two and a half stars.) Now, Summit Entertainment has announced a July 26th release date for Source Code on Blu-ray and DVD.
If you didn't check it out in theaters, Source Code stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Captain Colter Stevens, a soldier who awakens in somebody else's body aboard a Chicago commuter train. The last thing he remembers was being in a helicopter in Afghanistan, but before he has time to register much beyond confusion, the train is destroyed by a terrorist bombing. Surprisingly, however, Colter awakens yet again...and soon learns that he is part of a top-secret government program called Source Code, which allows him to leap into the body of one of the victims of the train bombing, reliving a short period in which he can attempt to discover who bombed the train, and thus prevent further attacks. As he relives the same moments over and over in different ways, he begins to suspect there is something more sinister going on, and begins to wonder if this history is truly written, or if those aboard can still, somehow, be saved.
