The Full Story On Labyrinth 2
While I'm sure a few of you loyal readers out there have spent the last 28 years wishing and waiting for a sequel to the Jim Henson-directed Labyrinth, I have some bad news. Despite what you may have heard in recent reports, there currently is no Labyrinth 2 in the works.
The internet launched into speculation mode this past Friday when a Variety piece about a new Jim Henson Co. project included an off-hand mention of an in-development Labyrinth 2, but now rumors of that project have been shut down by Entertainment Weekly. Inside sources have told the magazine that there currently aren't any plans to make a sequel to the beloved fantasy film, and that the reports that are currently swirling around are actually nothing more than rumor. What's more, there aren't any current plans to either "reboot" or "revive" the cult classic - which will probably be considered to be good news by most. The idea has apparently been floated in meetings - as I'm sure happens all the time at studios - but there is nothing actually in active development.
But while we may never get to see David Bowie reprise his role as the Jareth the Goblin King or see Jennifer Connelly as an adult version of Sarah, some of you will be happy to know that some of the Jim Henson Company's other memorable titles may soon be coming to a theater near you.
Fraggle Rock
For starters, those of you who spent their childhood watching the colorful Muppets of Fraggle Rock sing and play will be happy to know that the Jim Henson Company is still trying to get those great characters up on the big screen. The project is a long time coming, having been in development for years, and while we haven't heard a real update about it since 2012 - when Jim Byrkit and Alex Manugian were hired to co-write it - apparently it's still in the works.
The Dark Crystal 2
The Dark Crystal 2 is another movie that the Jim Henson Company has been talking about for a while. In 2009, Brian Henson (Jim Henson's son) said that they had a "very strong script" for the project titled The Power of the Dark Crystal, but we haven't heard anything about it since.
