There can never be enough movies about hot tubs that turn into time machines. Fortunately, MGM agrees with me and is going to bring another one of these sure-fire masterpieces to the big screen. So that people won’t get confused about what the movie might be about, the plan is to remove all doubt by calling it Hot Tub Time Machine. I guess it sort of has that Snakes on a Plane vibe to it. We all know how well that turned out.
The film was written by Josh Heald who is currently an unproven commodity. He has two scripts that are currently being produced, so this will be the third. According to HR, the plot revolves around a group of guys who used to be “cads” (that’s the word they use!) in their youth and use their hot tub to travel back in time. This totally sounds like a successor to Citizen Kane or On the Waterfront.
Either MGM executives have a great sense of humor or are tremendously delusion. One of them, Cale Boyter, had this to say about the film; “we’re always looking for ways to stand out from the rest of the pack in today's crowded marketplace, and what better way than to combine hot tub debauchery and the complications of time travel.” I can think of about 20 better ways, and that’s without even trying. I hope to god he was kidding, but he probably wasn’t. No word on directors, stars, or a shooting date for this future bomb.
