Gondry Wants To Remain Unpredictable With Green Hornet
I’m still trying to get my head around someone like Michel Gondry taking on a project like Green Hornet. I’m not saying Gondry wouldn’t work with someone like Seth Rogen - he’s worked with stranger matches, including Dave Chappelle, Jack Black and Jim Carrey. It just doesn’t seem like a potential action filled super-hero movie would be one the auteur would be interested in. It sounds like that may be exactly why Gondry is interested though - it’s the opportunity to do the unexpected.
Rogen talked a little bit about Green Hornet with Collider while making the rounds for his upcoming film, Observe & Report. He confirmed the movie will start filming later this year, and addressed some questions about the experimental director’s attachment to the movie, and whether he’d be bringing his unique style to the film.
“You know he really does not want to. Me and Evan have actually approached him with ideas like maybe we could do something like this…you could do some of your weird people made out of string and shit like that.” Rogen told Collider. He’s like, ‘No, I don’t want to any of that. The fact that you think I want to do that drives me crazy and makes me never want to do anything like that again.’ He hates being predictable and repetitive and doing what’s been done before. As soon as he starts to feel like he’s expected to do something he doesn’t want to do it at all.”
Even though Gondry doesn’t want to do what’s expected, it sounds like the movie is still shaping into a more common origin story approach, which is what Rogen and Evan Goldberg had been originally avoiding. Rogen indicates that embracing that idea will ultimately make the movie better, so who are we to criticize?
