The number of people who remember The Goonies as a good film is always surprising to me. I didn’t like it much when it first came out and while I can’t remember anything about the plot other than it involved a bunch of kids and some sort of search for a treasure, its appeal as a cult film on video and DVD is pretty surprising. But then again, I’m an old fart and was maybe outside the target audience back in 1985.
But there has been a lot of discussion lately about a sequel to The Goonies and when MTV Movies Blog talked to Goonie alumni Sean Astin about it recently, he said the sequel was an “absolute certainty.” Astin added, “The writing’s on the wall when they’re releasing the DVD in such numbers.” That doesn’t exactly sound like inside information, but the logic is somewhat sound.
Astin would like to see a movie where the kids of the original Goonies have an adventure that intersects with some of the plotlines from the original movie. That’s a plot device that has worked really well for the Disney animated sequels. Or maybe it makes all of those movies shitty, I can’t quite remember. Either way, Astin says he’s willing to collect a paycheck for it if asked.
