Not only does Guillermo del Toro know how to direct a kick-ass movie, he’s also pretty good when it comes to the tease. Though he’s supposed to be hard at work on making a duo of movies out of The Hobbit, it looks like del Toro still has something else up his sleeve.

Earlier today he dropped by TheOneRing.net and left this cryptic message:

In a few days there will be a BIG announcement (big for me, at least) that is not-Hobbit related. BEFORE anyone starts wondering the usual "how does he have time?, Is this detracting form The Hobbit?" etc It is a project that started over 2 years ago, before The Hobbit and will render fruits in the mid-term, not intruding on my Hobbit duties. Rest assured. The key letter is "D"

So just what is this old project which starts with the letter “D”? The most obvious answer would seem to be a movie called Deadman, which Del Toro was rumored to be working on back in 2006. It’s based on a DC comic about the ghost of a murdered circus acrobat given the power to possess any living being by a Hindu goddess. He uses his power to search for his murderer and helps other people along the way.

Or there’s always the possibility he could be talking about Dr. Strange, yet another comic book adaptation based on a superhero with powers gleaned from the occult. Back in very early 2008 Guillermo was supposed to be chatting with author Neil Gaiman about putting together a Dr. Strange movie.

Of course both of these projects were on his radar long before he got The Hobbit gig. Once that happened everything else was swept off the table to make room for Middle Earth. Now it looks like Del Toro is trying to squeeze at least one of his many other interests in before he loses himself in The Shire. Check back with Cinema Blend later in the week for Del Toro’s full, “hey guess what I’m up to” announcement.
