Hero Blend #84: Deadpool Reviewed (Spoiler Free Edition!)

After eagerly waiting the first ever live-action appearance of Deadpool, fans were devastated after watching X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While there was agreement that Ryan Reynolds was smart casting, almost nothing about the adaptation was faithful to the comics – culminating with the character getting his mouth sewn shot, a pair of arm blades, and laser eyes. It was a brutal time to be a fan of Marvel Comics’ most notorious mercenary, but now the movie gods are smiling as Deadpool is making its way to theaters.

Once again starring Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, the film follows the mercenary as his life gets rocked by news of cancer in his liver, lungs, prostate and brain. Seeking a miracle cure so that his life can continue with his one true love, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), he enters a special program that promises to turn him into a superhero. Instead, he’s left with horrifically scarred skin all over his body, and an incredible healing factor that allows him to recover from any injury. Going into full blown revenge mode, he becomes a costumed vigilante, takes on the moniker Deadpool hunts down the man responsible for all of his pain: Ajax a.k.a. Francis (Ed Skrein).

So here’s the big question: was Deadpool worth the long wait it took to get to the big screen? Joining me to supply the answer and provide a spoiler-free review of the film is HitFix’s Roth Cornet – so kick back and enjoy the show!
