As four day weekend holidays go, this Presidents Day weekend hasn't been very kind to new releases. Safe House, which traded places with last weekend's number one The Vow, held on to the top spot through Monday, and The Vow held on to second place. But Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which had debuted at third place for Friday through Sunday, got bumped to fourth by the more popular Journey 2.
Thanks to no school and parents looking for something to keep their kids occupied, family-focused Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was the top grosser on Monday, earning an additional $5.7 million. That handily topped Ghost Rider which only banked $4.3 million. Spy action-comedy This Means War stayed put at fifth place from Sunday to Monday, but only took in an additional $3 million.
The third new comer, The Secret World of Arriety eeked out a small jump. In ninth place on Sunday, it earned just enough to oust The Woman In Black and take its number eight spot.
Overall Presidents Day weekend sales are up over ten percent from last year. The 2011 top ten took in $150 million while this year's group banked $166 million. That marks a continued upswing at the box office this year, but numbers are still lower than they were this time three years ago.
