The Labor Day Holiday weekend is traditionally one of the quieter ones, marking the start of the sleepy weeks of September and October, and this year was no excpetion. The top ten banked around $100 million over the four day weekend, just nudging over the $99 million from 2011's holiday.
The Possession held the number one spot adding around $3.5 million on Monday to bring its holiday total to $21 million. Lawless added an estimated $3 million to its revised $10 million 3 day estimate (which dropped from the $11 million estimate posted yesterday).
The summer's big winner Marvel's The Avengers enjoyed a brief encore run over the holiday weekend. Heading into its 18th week in theaters, the movie had been down to fewer than 200 locations, but returned to over 1,700 for the holiday. While the boost wasn't enough to push it back into the top ten, it did add a couple of more million dollars to the film's substantial $600+ million domestic total.
