Hondo Restored In 3-D
Amazing news if your name is Al Bundy. For the rest of us, meh. Variety is reporting that the downtrodden shoe salesman’s favorite flick, Hondo, is receiving a lush remastering for a showing at this year’s Cannes.
The 53-year-old Western was originally filmed in WarnerColor’s 3-D, but few have ever seen it that way. For it’s showing at Cannes, the movie will be in color and 3-D, giving audiences the full experience originally intended for the John Wayne movie. It’s a shame ‘Married with Children’ isn’t still on the air, I’d love to see an episode in which the Bundy’s go to Cannes and Peg somehow keeps Al from attending his Hondo screening. The episode would invariable end with Al, as so many have before him, defeating the French.
Alright it probably sounds like I’m not interested in the movie and all I care about is lame ‘Married with Children’ references. Well that’s sort of true. My favorite John Wayne movie has always been Rio Bravo. I’ve never had much use for Hondo. Still, it’s nice to see the movie being resorted this way and shown in 50s era 3-D. If you listen to Robert Rodriguez or James Cameron they’ll have you thinking the process was invented last year in their basement. Not so, it’s been around a long time, just till now no one has ever bothered to perfect it so that it actually works. If any of you saw Meet the Robinsons in 3-D then before it you were treated to a 3-D Disney cartoon from that same era. It was impressive to say the least. If Hondo looks half as good this should be a very cool event.
