If you are one of the six people in the world who is really, really hoping the long rumored I Dream of Jeannie big-screen adaptation gets going, time to break out the belly dancing attire. A writer has been hired to re-write the four to the hundredth power scripts that have been floating around for years in the hopes of finally bringing Jeannie, Major Master Nelson, Rog, and Dr. Bellows to a theater new you.
HR says producer Sid Ganis has brought Rita Hsiao on board finally get this picture off the ground. Hsiao was one of the writers for both Toy Story 2 and Mulan. She also helped re-write Enchanted and 13 Going on 30. I put that at 3 out 4 in the “good job” pile.
The idea of a Jeannie movie has been around for awhile. We told you about some casting rumors way back in 2005. Even the bomb that was the Bewitched adaptation hasn’t killed this project forever. Quite a few people have written scripts but Ganis feels he finally has found his man (if by man, I mean woman.) He explains why in this non-cliché ridden statement. “She has a terrific, bright, fresh approach to Jeannie's story, with a twist and turn along the way," That sounds pretty generic Mr. Ganis, can you add anymore that might make me think this movie has any chance of being good? "She captured all of our imaginations in the telling of it." That’s it, I’m sold.
