I Am Legend was one of most eagerly anticipated in-production properties… until Will Smith got hold of it. He’s playing the lead in the film, and since he took the role there’s been an ill wind blowing around the project. Rumor has it that he’s forced them to change the script in order to “Big Willie” it up the way he did I, Robot. My fear is that in doing so he cut the heart right out of it.
But The Movie Blog has somehow managed to score a first look at the film’s movie poster (to your right) and though who knows how the movie will turn out… whoever designed the poster at least seems to get it. The brilliance of the script was the loneliness and hopelessness of the character Will Smith is playing. I don’t know if the movie will stick with that or fill the gut-wrenching silence with Big Willie catchphrases, but the one sheet sure seems full of solitude and regret.
It’s just a poster, but it’s nice to know that at least someone involved with I Am Legend, even if it’s just the marketing department, gets it. I can’t wait to see this sucker in a more appealing size. This is likely all we’ll have from the film for awhile, since it’s not out till December 15 of 2007.
UPDATE! After a tip from one of our forum folk, I went scouring in all the right places and found out that, unfortunately, this poster is a total fake. It's a beautiful fake, but a fake nonetheless. TMB missed on this one. It's actually one of two fake movie posters. I'm posting them both below in the high-res versions I found, just for fun. My brief moment of optimism about this project just ended. Damn.
