Late last year we learned that Walden Media and Jennifer Lopez were teaming up to produce a live-action film based on the computer game Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? While the report said that the project would be something in between National Treasure and The Thomas Crowne Affair, a writer had yet to be hired to handle the script. Now, however, the project has found it's man with the pen and is getting ready to move forward.
According to THR, Darren Lemke has been given the duty of writing a version of Carmen Sandiego suitable for the big screen. The writer made his feature debut in 2004, writing and directing a small independent movie called Lost with Dean Cain and Danny Trejo, but he has since found himself working within the studio system. In 2010 he scripted Shrek Forever After, the third and final sequel in the franchise, and he has since written both Jack The Giant Killer for Warner Bros. (which isn't due out until next year) as well as the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film Turbo, which features an all-star cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Giamatti, Michelle Rodriguez, Ken Jeong, Maya Rudolph, Richard Jenkins, Michael Pena and about a thousand other recognizable names.
As for Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, it would seem not much has changed since we last heard about the project. Lopez is still considering starring in the project as well as producing and there is still no director attached. The story will follow Carmen's former partner at the ACME detective agency who is on the hunt for her after she becomes the world's greatest thief. It's quickly discovered, however, that there is a larger conspiracy at play involving ACME and Carmen's partnet begins to question if she is a villain or a hero.
