Jan De Bont Directs Point Break 2
Jan de Bont has escaped the career dead end that was the giant shark movie Meg, and moved on to directing a sequel nobody particularly wants, but that we’ll probably all still see anyway because we won’t be able to help ourselves. HR says he’s directing the long rumored sequel to Point Break called Point Break: Indo.
The original 1991 movie starred Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, and Gary Busey. No word on whether any of them might be involved in the sequel yet, but Swayze’s health problems make him extremely unlikely, and Gary Busey is flat out crazy. That leaves Keanu, who hasn’t really done anything worth noticing since The Matrix. Point Break 2 might not actually be a bad move for him, but who knows if he’ll do it.
The best news here is that the sequel is written by the same guy who wrote the first one, W. Peter Iliff. In the first film, an FBI agent goes undercover as a surfer to catch a gang of surfing bank robbers. When the story that this film might be happening first broke back in November of 2007 here, word was the plot of the sequel would involve a Navy Solider recruited to infiltrate a gang of criminals in Southeat Asia. Adding to that, IESB says the new movie is about a military specialist / surfing star who takes off for the waves on the coast of Bali after being disqualified from the pro-tour. There he’s recruited by a security organization trying to hunt down a bunch of surfing outlaws. Here’s the kicker. The gang he’s after is called “The Bush Administration”.
Sounds a little far fetched to me, here’s hoping the plot turns out to merely be a rumor. The movie’s existence though is no rumor. Point Break: Indo is happening, and headed towards theaters.
