When you think of Jason Voorhees, you probably picture a big guy carrying a machete and wearing a hockey mask. But, Jason didn’t adopt the goalie look until Friday the 13th Part 3. By the looks of a photo from Shock Till You Drop, the creative team of the newest Friday the 13th installment is returning to the roots in designing Jason’s look.

Way back in 1980, when Jason was seen as a memory of his mother and mere hallucination of Alice (Adrienne King), the key to his costume was a number of prosthetics and then some mud to top it off. In the 1981 sequel he grows some hair and gets false teeth to give his face even more of a distorted look. To thanks all the hard working makeup artists, they threw a burlap bag over his head. When the third part was released in 1982, you’d almost never know he was the same character from the first two films. At this point, Jason takes up residence in a barn hiding from the world. After someone visiting the local lake resort stumbles upon his adobe, Jason murders him and takes his hockey mask. Now, wearing the infamous mask, he comes out of hiding to finish off the rest of the group and continue on to a number of other Friday the 13th films.

In the latest reboot of Friday the 13th, burlap is back in style. The film’s producer, Brad Fuller explains it was important to his team to recreate that defining moment when Jason moved from the bag to the mask. "That was something that we all wanted to do in the movie. If we're going to be true to what we're doing here, and tell - obviously not a remake of the first movie and it's not a sequel - key moments from all of the movies, we really wanted to integrate it in our own way." This sounds like a potentially chilling scene, both for the longtime Jason fans and for the ones who have recently jumped on the Friday the 13th train for the latest installments. FX artist Scott Stoddard can take credit for the look you see in this image. Friday the 13th starring Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears, Danielle Panabaker, Travis Van Winkle and Aaron Yoo is set to terrify theaters on February 13th.
