Jay Baruchel demonstrated some surprising acting chops in Tropic Thunder, especially given that he was up against Robert Downey Jr.'s crazed, Oscar-hungry actor, so I'm glad to see he's getting more plum roles. I'm less glad to see that the next one will be up against Nicolas Cage, but hey, what can you do.

Baruchel will co-star with Cage in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, a live-action Disney film that apparently doesn't have anything to do with the famous sequence in Fantasia. Cage plays a sorcerer living in modern-day New York who's seeking out a new apprentice-- and you've got to figure that Baruchel is the nominee. Jon Turteltaub, director of that classic National Treasure franchise, is in charge, which means the movie will at least be entertaining if not the most original effort ever. Double points if they manage to work in the dancing brooms anyway.
