Joel Edgerton Developing Psychological Thriller Weirdo As Directorial Debut
Joel Edgerton has already worn many hats during his career as a filmmaker. He is probably best known for his acting, starring in movies like Warrior and The Thing, but he also wrote and executive produced the 2008 Australian thriller The Square. As a director, however, his work has been limited largely to just short films, but he is now in the process of developing his directorial debut.
During a press day for The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which is in theaters today, I had the opportunity to interview Edgerton one-on-one and when I asked if he had any plans to direct a feature, he said that the wheels are already in motion. “Yeah, absolutely! I’ve got plans to do that,” he said. “There’s something that I want to make, if I can, next year.” While he wouldn't reveal any details about the plot, he did reveal that the movie is a psychological thriller (which is one of his favorite genres) called Weirdo. “I already have that script ready and we’re sort of in the process of pushing that along.”
Before that Edgerton will be headed back to Australia, where he is set to star in Felony, another movie based on a screenplay that he wrote. Matthew Saville is attached to direct and production will be gearing up at the end of the year. Said Edgerton, “Hopefully I’ll learn some more lessons from him along with all these other directors I’ve worked for.”
Check back here later this afternoon to read my full interview with Joel Edgerton!
