Josh Hartnett is proving to be more than just a pretty face. The actor already proved some of his worth by donating his time for a test clip which eventually led to Sin City being made, breaking new ground on comic book adaptations. Now Hartnett is getting involved in an equally strange project.
"I'm going to Romania to shoot this film called Bunraku," Hartnett told MTV News. "All the cast isn't set yet, but it's going to be a lot of really interesting actors, in this weird kind of papier-mâché world." Wait a minute - a papier-mache world? What’s this all about?
The movie title refers to a type of Japanese puppet theatre which has been around for over 400 years. The movie will utilize a puppet / Oragami style as puppeteers will control 4-foot-tall puppets, and CGI will be used to mesh the bizarre effects with live action footage. The result is undescribable, and probably will remain so until actual footage from the movie is released.
As for Hartnett, the actor will play a character called “The Drifter” who comes across this strange world. The character is a gypsy figure who Hartnett describes as ” [having] something to prove,” leading to some strange fight sequences.
So, for those keeping score, that’s strange puppets, CG, a papier-mache world, and fight sequences. Confused? Even Hartnett admits the picture is something bizarre: "It's odd; it's out there. I've been trying to do as much artistic fare as I can and things that are compelling to watch as well." Here’s hoping this is as compelling as whatever Hartnett’s been watching to draw him to such an odd sounding project. Personally, I couldn’t be more intrigued.
