Lincoln, Les Miserables And Life Of Pi Lead BAFTA Award Nominations
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, aka BAFTA, is roughly the British equivalent of the Academy Awards, honoring the best in English-language film with a slight bend toward homegrown product. The group announced their award nominations today, just one day before the Academy Award nominations go out, and there's likely to be some serious overlap between the two-- Lincoln scored the most nods with ten, while Life of Pi and Les Miserables each received eight.
You can see the British bias most clearly in the eight nominations for Skyfall, including acting nods for Judi Dench and Javier Bardem in the supporting categories and an Outstanding British Film mention. That category also made room for a few more films under loved in this year's awards race, like Anna Karenina-- which still couldn't manage any acting prizes-- and Seven Psychopaths.
Then again, the strongest bias among the BAFTAs might simply be for Ben Affleck. He scored a highly unexpected Best Actor nomination for his work in Argo, plus the expected nods for Oustanding Film, Director and Adapted Screenplay (written by Chris Terrio). Could this be a harbinger of a huge surprise Best Actor Oscar nomination for Affleck? Probably not. But it's fun to speculate with the awards season in full swing.
See the partial list of BAFTA nominees below, and the full list here. The awards will take place on Sunday, February 10.
