New Line Brings In Dodgeball Director For Pot Comedy We're The Millers
Since well before Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle put its stamp on the modern pot comedy, its studio New Line had been developing another one, We're The Millers. I don't even know what makes a script so good that a studio is willing to keep developing it even when the studio itself goes out of business, but We're The Millers is finding new life at the version of New Line that exists now, nearly 10 years after the studio first started developing it.
According to THR, Dodgeball director Rawson Thurber is in negotiations to take over the project, returning comedy after his sophomore directing effort Mysteries of Pittsburgh, an adaptation of Michael Chabon's novel, was critically panned. Will Arnett and Steve Buscemi had been attached at various points to play the lead character, a drug dealer who embarks on one last job in Mexico and must invent a family in order to get a stash across the border, but presumably they'll be starting from scratch to cast it this time-- the main character is described as being 30 years old. Given that Weeds has been working with a recent subplot about Mexican drug dealers they may need to tweak the version of the script that was around in 2002, but if New Line has another weed-smoking hit with A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas 3D on November 4, they may move forward even more enthusiastically with Millers.
