Famed French director Luc Besson says that one of his next films may be his last. After the pics we’ve seen so far from his next movie, Arthur and the Minimoys, that may actually be for the best.
Besson is probably best known in America as the director of The Fifth Element and Leon, but his next movie is a bit of a departure from his usual high octane filmmaking. Arthur and the Minimoys is a computer animated movie and the story of a 10-year-old boy who ends up in the mythical land of the Minimoys. Minimoys apparently look a lot like troll dolls. Not good.
After Minimoys, Besson is working on something called Angel-A, and he sounds content to stop right there. “I always said I would do 10 films. Arthur is number nine, ANGEL-A is number 10,” he told WENN. To him, ending his career with Angel-A seems appropriate. “It's funny, because the last line in my film is, 'I'm free'.”
By limiting himself to a certain number of movies, he feels that he’s pushed himself to do better work. “When you've limited yourself to a certain time, it pushes you to do things that you feel are important.” While Besson’s done some pretty good stuff, I’m not sure I’ve ever thought of it as important.
Besson is only 47-years old, though he’s been making movies since 1981. 47 sounds a bit old for retiring, so don’t be surprised if he keeps right on going. Even if he does stop directing, Besson’s done plenty of writing and producing in his career and there’s no reason to think he’ll stop working on other aspects of filmmaking.
