Mallrats 2 Has A Fancy New Name
When it came to naming the sequel to Clerks., Kevin Smith ultimately took the easy path and simply decided to call it Clerks II. As such, when it was revealed that Smith was working on a sequel to Mallrats, there was a very strong possibility that the final title would simply be Mallrats 2. Evidently that won't be the case, as the filmmaker has just revealed that the name of the upcoming follow-up will instead be Mallbrats.
As he has been known to do, Kevin Smith made the announcement through his multiple social media accounts - but he didn't simply write "Mallrats 2 will be Mallbrats!" Instead, he posted what amounts to our first look at the script, and a message about what we can expect from the film. Check out his Facebook post below:
The line about the movie being "fulla old friends" shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, given the fact that the last few weeks have been filled with reports about returning castmembers. Smith has said that there are 18 characters coming back in total, and that group includes Jeremy London as T.S. Quint, Jason Lee as Brodie, Shannen Doherty as Rene, Jason Mewes as Jay, Michael Rooker as Jared Svenning, and Brian O'Halloran as Gill Hicks. The line about a bloody battle involving Stan Lee is certainly interesting, and the shoutout to Jim is presumably a reference to James Jacks - a producer on the first Mallrats who passed away last year. (In the original Mallrats, he gets a special thanks that says "[thanks] for treating us like the Coens as opposed to the twenty-something know-nothings we really are.")
Adding an interesting twist to the Mallbrats title is the fact that Kevin Smith seemingly hinted at this name a little less than a year ago. In the comments section of the Facebook post featured above, he linked to this post of himself and his daughter from last summer:
Mallbrats doesn't seem to have a release plan organized just yet, but production on the movie is going to be starting this summer, and it's likely that we can expect to see the finished product in theaters sometime next year. As soon as there is any official word on the matter, Kevin Smith will surely immediately announce it to the world, so stay tuned in the coming months for more updates.
