Since coming out of nowhere to win a Best Actress Oscar in 2008 for her role as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose, Marion Cotillard has been making her way through a series of Hollywood roles with, let's admit, limited success. Yes, she's learned a whole lot more English since her broken and adorable Oscar acceptance speech, and in movies like Inception and especially Midnight in Paris she's been quite good. But I've always gotten the sense that she could be genuinely great acting in French again.
Now she finally seems ready to return to her home country and work again, and better yet, she's teaming up with genuinely great director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) to do it. Variety reports that she'll star in the upcoming Rust and Bone, which budgeted at $22 million will be one of the biggest French films shot this year. It's adapted from Craig Davidson's short-story collection of the same name and described as "a mix of suspense of love," which sounds pretty good to me. Production is happening for 14 weeks this fall in France and Belgium, and though this sounds gigantic by French standards, it's probably nothing compared to the last movie Cotillard, The Dark Knight Rises. Oh yeah, remember that little thing?
