Martin Campbell Derails
Casino Royale director Martin Campbell had been hinting that he might return for the next Bond movie, Bond 22, but now it looks like that’s out the window. Variety says he’s in negotiations to take over helming duties for a Fox movie called Unstoppable.
Written by Live Free or Die Hard’s Mark Bomback, Unstoppable pits a train engineer and his conductor in a race against time to stop a runaway train carrying a load of toxic chemicals. They’re pursuing the train in a second locomotive and must stop it before it derails on a curve and causes a toxic spill that will decimate a town.
The plot sounds like something lifted from 1982, train disaster movies aren’t exactly very current. Besides, if you watch ‘Penn & Teller’s Bullshit’ you know that the containers they put most of those seriously dangerous waste materials in are so spill-proof that a train derailment probably isn’t something to worry about. Frankly, Martin Campbell is better than this. As movie ideas go, this one seems pretty lame and generic.
